Stadler Begins Assembly of 11 FLIRT InterCity EMUs for Hungary's GYSEV
Switzerland's Stadler has begun assembly of 11 FLIRT InterCity electric multiple units (EMUs — self-propelled trainsets with traction equipment distributed under the cars) for Hungarian regional operator GYSEV, marking the first new InterCity rolling stock procured for service in Hungary in three decades.
The order represents Hungary's first InterCity fleet renewal since the mid-1990s. The 11 trainsets will operate long-distance domestic services when they enter passenger service from late 2027, replacing aging stock on GYSEV's network.
Stadler is manufacturing bodyshells at its Szolnok facility in Hungary, with the first four units now in assembly at the company's Siedlce plant in Poland. GYSEV placed the order for the FLIRT InterCity platform, Stadler's modular EMU design adapted for longer-distance services with higher comfort specifications than suburban variants.
The new fleet follows a 30-year gap in InterCity procurement for Hungarian operators. GYSEV, a regional railway undertaking serving routes in western Hungary and cross-border services to Austria, selected the FLIRT platform to upgrade passenger capacity and onboard amenities on its longer-distance network. The contract includes production at Stadler's Hungarian manufacturing base in Szolnok, where vehicle shells are being fabricated before transfer to Poland for final assembly and systems integration. Delivery is scheduled to begin in 2027, with full fleet entry into revenue service by late 2027.
Stadler has supplied FLIRT EMUs to operators across Europe, with the InterCity variant featuring enhanced seating layouts, luggage provision and ride quality over the base commuter configuration. The Hungary order adds to Stadler's installed base in Central Europe, where the company maintains production and service facilities.
