Network Rail launches £15m Barking Eurohub freight terminal upgrade
Network Rail and the Department for Transport announced on 25 February 2026 that they had secured Barking Eurohub and planned a £15 million redevelopment of the east London terminal. The terminal upgrade aims to establish the facility as a primary gateway for international rail freight between Britain and continental Europe.
The east London site functions as the UK endpoint for cargo services using the HS1 high-speed rail corridor. The redevelopment is intended to unlock growth in cross-Channel freight movements by rail.
Barking Eurohub receives trains carrying goods that travel through the Channel Tunnel via the HS1 infrastructure. The facility's expansion aligns with government objectives to strengthen rail freight connections linking the UK with European markets.
Network Rail confirmed that construction activity has started on the terminal transformation. The investment will enable the site to process higher volumes of international cargo traffic moving between Britain and the continent.
The £15 million programme represents a major infrastructure initiative for enhancing UK-Europe freight connectivity through rail. The project leverages the existing HS1 high-speed route that provides Britain's rail connection to the Channel Tunnel, with the terminal upgrade designed to re-establish and expand capacity for cross-Channel freight operations.
