Spain Approves €880m Extension of Madrid Metro Line 11 to Valdebebas Norte
Spain's Comunidad de Madrid has approved a 7.2 km extension of metro Line 11 from Mar de Cristal to the northern suburban development area of Valdebebas Norte. The project carries a total cost of €880.5m, including four new stations and two connection points.
The extension will complete a new cross-city axis linking Cuatro Vientos in the southwest with Valdebebas and Terminal 4 of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport in the northeast. This northern section serves IFEMA-Cárcavas, Ciudad de la Justicia, Hospital Zendal, Terminal 4 and Valdebebas Norte. The project cost is split into a €580m package for the Mar de Cristal–Hospital Zendal segment and a €300m package for the Hospital Zendal–Valdebebas Norte segment.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027. Full extension completion is expected around 2030-31. Service is scheduled to begin after construction is finished.
The Line 11 extension forms part of Madrid's broader metro network expansion programme. Once operational, the extended line will provide direct connections between key transport hubs and the rapidly developing Valdebebas Norte residential and commercial district. The €880.5m investment is split into a €580m package for the Mar de Cristal–Hospital Zendal segment and a €300m package for the Hospital Zendal–Valdebebas Norte segment, covering civil works, track installation and station construction across the 7.2 km alignment.
