Alstom Delivers First 2 of 8 Metropolis Trains to Santo Domingo Metro Line 2

Alstom has delivered the first two of eight three-car Metropolis trains to Santo Domingo Metro for the Line 2 extension project managed by the Office for Transport Reorganization (OPRET) in the Dominican Republic.

The delivery marks a key phase in Latin America's expanding urban rail sector, where metro systems are increasingly adopting European-manufactured rolling stock to meet growing passenger demand. The three-car configuration provides operational flexibility for medium-capacity urban lines while maintaining standardized maintenance protocols across Alstom's global Metropolis fleet. This delivery pattern - initial units followed by staged rollout - allows operators to conduct acceptance testing while maintaining construction schedules.

Alstom manufactures the Metropolis trains at its Santa Perpétua facility in Barcelona, with the 2024 contract covering the complete eight-unit fleet for Line 2. OPRET awarded Alstom a separate contract in 2023 for 10 Metropolis trains destined for Line 1, establishing a standardized fleet approach across the Santo Domingo network. Maite Ramos, Alstom's General Manager for Northern Latin America, confirmed the delivery schedule aligns with the metro extension timeline.

The Santo Domingo orders reflect broader investment in urban rail infrastructure across Latin American capitals, where metro systems are expanding to address traffic congestion and air quality concerns. Alstom's Metropolis platform competes directly with CAF's Urbos and Siemens Inspiro families in the regional market, with standardized designs reducing procurement costs for smaller metro operators. The Dominican Republic's dual-line approach creates potential for future fleet expansion as ridership data validates the network's capacity requirements.
