Alstom wins Sweden night train maintenance deal for SJ fleet
French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom will maintain night train equipment in Sweden under a two-year agreement with operator SJ, secured through a Swedish Transport Administration procurement process. The deal was announced by Alstom on 8 July 2026, with the contract valued at tens of millions of euros according to the company.
The maintenance package covers the night train fleet of 12 locomotives and 75 carriages — close to 90 vehicles — operating primarily on the Stockholm–Umeå and Stockholm–Narvik routes.
Under the new award, maintenance will be carried out primarily in Luleå, with around 60 employees based in Luleå, Umeå and Kiruna. The maintenance award underpins SJ's night train operating contract with Trafikverket for services to upper Norrland, running from December 2026 to 2028, according to Railway News. The award strengthens Alstom's foothold in Swedish overnight rail maintenance, complementing its broader Nordic service portfolio.
SJ runs the night train operations within the procurement structure set by the Swedish Transport Administration. The two-year duration ensures ongoing support for Sweden's long-haul overnight passenger connections between the capital and northern territories.
Alstom's maintenance responsibilities cover the vehicles deployed on these extended-distance nocturnal services, which form a key component of Sweden's inter-regional passenger rail network.
