Alstom JV Secures €107m Five-Year Contract to Maintain 250 WAG-12B Locomotives in India
Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL), a joint venture between Alstom and Indian Railways, has been awarded a five-year maintenance services contract valued at €107m for 250 WAG-12B electric locomotives.
The contract covers comprehensive maintenance of the fleet at MELPL's Nagpur Depot. The agreement follows execution of a previous four-year maintenance contract for the same locomotive type, extending the operational support partnership between the companies.
The WAG-12B Prima T8 locomotives are 12,000 HP units capable of hauling 6,000-tonne loads at speeds up to 120 kph on India's Dedicated Freight Corridors. Under the new contract, Alstom will deploy specialized Prompt Response Teams (PRTs) at strategic locations across India for rapid issue resolution.
The maintenance scope includes scheduled and unscheduled maintenance work, materials provision, and fleet servicing at the Nagpur facility. MELPL operates as the primary production and maintenance hub for WAG-12B locomotives, which form a core component of Indian Railways' heavy freight operations.
The contract value of €107m represents a significant service agreement in India's rail maintenance sector. The five-year term extends operational support for a fleet accounting for substantial freight capacity on the network's dedicated freight infrastructure, which operates separate tracks designed for higher-speed goods transport.
Alstom's continued role in maintaining the WAG-12B fleet reflects the ongoing service requirements for high-horsepower electric locomotives on freight corridors where the 12,000 HP units provide enhanced haulage capacity compared to older locomotive classes. The Prompt Response Teams will provide technical support across multiple locations to minimize downtime and maintain fleet availability.
