Brazil Opens 1.6 km Initial Section of Belo Horizonte Metro Line 2
Brazil's Belo Horizonte metro opened the first 1.6 km section of Line 2 on July 3, connecting Amazonas station to Nova Suíça with interchange to the existing Line 1.
The launch establishes a critical transfer point between the city's two metro lines at Nova Suíça station, enabling passengers to connect between routes. Initial service operates weekdays only, from 09.00 to 16.00 hours, with all-day operation planned for gradual introduction in subsequent phases.
The 1.6 km opening marks the first segment of Line 2's broader planned corridor. Service frequency and operating hours remain limited during this initial phase as the operator validates system performance and passenger flow patterns before expanding timetabled operations.
Belo Horizonte's metro network now comprises Line 1 plus the inaugural section of Line 2. The phased opening strategy allows operational testing of the new infrastructure under controlled conditions before full service integration. Line 2's complete route will extend beyond the current terminus when construction of remaining sections concludes, though no timeline for subsequent phases appeared in available project documentation.
