Hitachi Rail Celebrates Launch of 14.29 km Sanying Metro Line in Taiwan
Japan's Hitachi Rail has celebrated the 30 June 2026 entry into revenue service of the Sanying MRT Line in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The New Taipei City Government announced the opening of the 14.29 km, 12-station medium-capacity metro, offering free travel through 31 August 2026.
The launch represents the completion of a metro infrastructure project in which Hitachi Rail supplied rolling stock and systems. The Department of Rapid Transit Systems designated the opening phase as trial operations, with passengers using stored-value cards eligible for complimentary rides during the two-month promotional period.
The Sanying Line extends metro coverage in New Taipei City, Taiwan's most populous municipality surrounding the capital Taipei. The 12-station alignment serves the Sanying district and surrounding areas with automated medium-capacity technology. Hitachi Rail's involvement spans vehicle supply and system integration for the line, which now joins the wider New Taipei Metro network.
The free-ride policy through 31 August aims to familiarise passengers with the new service and drive initial ridership. The New Taipei City Government's announcement positions the opening as a trial phase, standard practice for new metro lines in Taiwan before full commercial operations commence. Hitachi Rail publicly acknowledged its role in the project upon the line's entry into passenger service.
