PKP PLK Launches €60m Tender for 5.5km Warsaw Airport-Modlin Rail Line

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK) has launched the tender for constructing a €60m double-track electrified railway line connecting Warsaw Modlin Airport to the Polish rail network. The 5.5km line will link Modlin Station directly to Warsaw's second airport, which primarily serves low-cost carriers.

The project addresses a critical infrastructure gap in Poland's capital region transport network. Warsaw Modlin Airport currently lacks direct rail access, forcing passengers to rely on bus connections that take 40-50 minutes from central Warsaw. The new rail link will integrate the airport into Poland's national passenger network and provide freight access to support cargo operations. This connection type has become standard for major European airports, with rail links proven to reduce road congestion and provide reliable journey times for time-sensitive airport passengers.

The tender scope includes expanding Modlin Station with an additional track and 200m platform to handle increased passenger volumes. PKP PLK will construct a new station directly at the airport terminal building, eliminating transfer requirements. The project also encompasses a freight facility and three road viaducts to maintain existing transport corridors. Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak stated the investment will provide convenience for thousands of daily passengers through direct rail connectivity.

The Warsaw airport rail project forms part of broader Polish infrastructure modernization efforts in the Mazovia region. European airports increasingly require direct rail connections to meet sustainability targets and passenger expectations, with recent examples including Berlin Brandenburg and Vienna International airports receiving new rail terminals. The Modlin connection will position Warsaw as a dual-airport hub with comprehensive rail integration when completed.
