CRRC Tiger EMUs Enter Regular Service on Serbia's Belgrade–Subotica Route
China's CRRC Corporation has begun regular passenger service in Serbia with four-car Tiger electric multiple units (EMUs), designated series ŽS 411/419, on the Belgrade to Subotica route.
The deployment marks the entry into revenue service of CRRC rolling stock on Serbia's national network. Each four-car trainset provides 242 seats, including 45 in first class, plus toilets and multifunctional spaces. The first unit arrived in Serbia in spring 2024, with operations commencing by December as planned.
The Tiger platform is a standardised EMU design that CRRC has supplied to multiple markets. The four-car formation — an EMU is a self-propelled train where traction motors are distributed across multiple cars rather than concentrated in a single locomotive — allows the operator to match capacity to demand on medium-distance intercity corridors. The Belgrade–Subotica section is a key north–south axis linking the capital with Serbia's northern border region.
Serbia's fleet modernisation has drawn on Chinese rolling stock supply in recent years, with CRRC deliveries forming part of a broader infrastructure and equipment renewal programme. The ŽS 411/419 series joins the national operator's roster as the country upgrades both track and rolling stock on primary corridors. CRRC has also commenced deliveries to Romania under separate contracts, reflecting the manufacturer's expanding footprint in Southeast Europe's passenger rail sector.
