Siemens Completes 80-Unit Vectron Delivery to VR After 12-Year Programme
Siemens Mobility delivered the 80th and final Vectron electric locomotive to VR Group in April 2026, completing a contract signed in 2014 that represented the largest single order for the Vectron platform at the time.
The completion marks a significant milestone for broad-gauge electric traction in Northern Europe, establishing the Vectron as the backbone of VR's freight operations. The 12-year delivery programme demonstrates the challenges of adapting standard European platforms for Finland's unique operating environment, including 1,524mm broad gauge and extreme weather conditions. VR's fleet has already accumulated 72 million kilometres in service, validating the design's reliability in harsh Nordic conditions.
All 80 locomotives were manufactured at Siemens' Munich facility with bogies produced in Graz, Austria. Each unit is configured for Finland's broad gauge network and engineered to operate in temperatures as low as -40°C. The locomotives feature cold-weather adaptations including enhanced heating systems, modified lubricants, and reinforced electrical components to maintain performance during extended sub-zero operations.
The order represented VR Group's largest rolling stock investment at the time of signing and established Siemens as the dominant electric locomotive supplier in Finland. The successful delivery positions Siemens for potential follow-on orders as VR modernises its freight operations, while the proven cold-weather performance opens opportunities for similar deployments across Nordic railways.
