<p>Under general supervision, performs skilled painting work on exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures and equipment; and performs related duties as required.<br> <br> <u>Examples of Important and Essential Duties</u><br> According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.</p><ol><li>Applies paints and other protective or decorative finishes to various exterior or interior of buildings, including painting and finishing of partitions, window casings, doors, cabinets, cases and woodwork; paints street equipment, traffic or airfield markings, playground facilities and other outdoor structures.</li><li>Prepares surfaces for painting, including erecting and hanging scaffolding; removes all paint or varnish by scraping or sanding; washes, cleans and patches surfaces and otherwise prepares surfaces, such as wood, metal, glass, stucco, wallboard, brick, cement, tape and drywall for painting.</li><li>Mixes and prepares paints, lacquers, varnishes, shellacs and other preservatives; selects, blends and matches colors in proper proportions.</li><li>Assembles, operates various types of painting equipment, including spray guns, pressure washer, grinder, high reach power and other equipment; cleans and maintains brushes and other painting equipment; disposes of hazardous materials.</li><li>Occasionally performs more exacting painting, including lettering and touch-up work.</li><li>Transports and delivers paint, materials, and various types of painting equipment to the worksite.</li><li>May occasionally plan work programs, including estimating and ordering materials and equipment required for assigned project.</li><li>Prepares estimates, work orders and other job related documentation.</li><li>May include additional duties as assigned.</li></ol><p><u>Nature of work:</u> Sustained physical effort with considerable standing, bending and occasionally heavy lifting; working in confined spaces; and intermittent exposure to hazardous heights and poorly ventilated areas, streets and roadways.</p> <p><u>Education:</u>  Completion of a recognized painters' apprenticeship program; <strong>AND</strong></p><p><u>Experience:</u>  Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a journey-level painter which included a combination of painting exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures equipment, roadways and airfields. Experience solely in automotive or sign painting does not qualify; <strong>AND</strong></p><p><u>License:</u>  Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.</p><p><u>Education substitution:</u>  Additional qualifying experience can be substituted for the apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.</p><p><strong>Notes</strong><br> 1. Some positions may require the following Special Condition: six (6) months verifiable experience in painting Airfields, highways and/or roadways governed by Federal Laws and Regulations.<br> 2. Some positions may require the ability to maintain a California Lead Worker Certification. Failure to do so may result in suspension or termination of employment.<br> 3. Applicants selected for employment must be insurable and maintain insurability under the department’s automobile liability insurance policy. Please review our articles on <a href="https://sfdhr.org/recruitment-details#qualifications" rel="noopener noreferrer">Employment Application and Minimum Qualifications</a><u> </u>and <a href="https://sfdhr.org/recruitment-details#verification" rel="noopener noreferrer">Verification of Experience and/or Education</a><u> </u>for considerations taken when reviewing applications.    </p><p><strong><u>Selection Procedures:</u></strong> <a href="https://sfdhr.org/information-about-hiring-process#exams" rel="noopener noreferrer">(General Exam Process)</a><br> After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:<br> <br> <u>Written Multiple-Choice Examination (Weight - 100%):</u> Candidates deemed eligible and admitted to the examination process will be administered a written multiple-choice test designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but is not limited to; Knowledge of the practices, procedures, and techniques of the painter's trade; knowledge related to the operation and maintenance of the tools, equipment and materials of the trade; properties of various types of paint and their applications to a variety of surfaces mixing and blending of paints and pigments; painting safety practices, including the rigging and use of scaffolds; basic arithmetic and measurements; ability to mix, match and harmonize colors; maintain accurate records and document actions taken; follow and understand written instructions; ability to use a computer; human relations ability.</p><p><em>This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.</em></p> <p><strong><u>Eligible List/Score Report:</u></strong><br> A confidential eligible list of qualifying candidates will be created and used for certification purposes only. A score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection upon request once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.</p><p><strong>Customs Clearance: </strong><br> This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area.
