Wellington Metro Upgrade Programme (Hutt, Johnsonville, Kapiti lines renewal)

Project overview

This electrification programme upgrades the existing New Zealand corridor to 1.5 kV DC overhead. The line uses 1.5 kV DC overhead electrification and 1067 mm Cape gauge. KiwiRail and Greater Wellington Regional Council and NZ Transport Agency are delivering the project. Under construction since 2021, the line is scheduled to open in 2030, with an investment of NZD 700 m (~USD 420 m).
