A £362M (€416M) fleet replacement programme for the Tyne and Wear Metro. All 46 new Stadler Class 555 trains delivered by February 2026. Full passenger service expected summer 2026. The new trains replace the original 1980 fleet and feature dual 1500V DC OHE + battery power for future extensions.
Construction began in 2020 and the project opened in 2024.
The project has an estimated investment of £362M.
